Unit reading assignments should be completed and ready to discuss in class by the beginning of class period. In-class exercises count towards participation.

Week 1 (01/10)

Unit 1: Introduction(s)

Students familiarize themselves with course website, textbooks and requirements.

Assignments:
  • Read and be ready to discuss, Chapter 1 (Four Freedoms).
  • Respond to Study Question #6 (minimum 250 word essay). Due 01/19
  • Week 2 (01/17) Monday is Martin Luther King Holiday

    Unit 2: History and background

    Assignments:
  • Read and be ready to discuss Chapter 2 (Four Freedoms).
  • Respond to Study Question #4 (minimum 250 words). Due 01/24.
  • Week 3 (01/24)

    Unit 3: Religion and the First Amendment

    Assignments:
  • Read and be ready to discuss Chapter 3 (Four Freedoms)
  • Respond to Study Questions 2, 6 and 9 (minimum 250 words). Due 01/26.
  • Week 4 (01/31)

    Unit 4 : Case Law
    Assignments:
  • Read and be ready to discuss Schenck v. US, Abrams v. US, and Gitlow v. State of New York (First Amendment Vol. 1)
  • Write a brief (100 words each case) introducing the main support, and dissenting opinions of each case. Due 02/02.
  • Week 5 (02/07)

    Unit 5: Regulation of Political Speech

    Assignments:
  • Read and be ready to discuss Chapter 4 (Four Freedoms).
  • Read Dennis, Yates, Tinker, and Johnson (First Amendment Vol. 1), and respond to Study Questions 3 & 4. Due 2/09.
  • Week 6 (02/14)

    Unit 6: Broadcast Speech Case Law
    Assignments:
  • Read Near, New York Times, Nebraska Press Assn. (First Amendment Vol. 1)
  • Write a brief (100 words each case) introducing the main support, and dissenting opinions of each case. Due 02/16.
  • Week 7 (02/21)

    Unit 7: Regulation of Broadcast Speech and Access to Information
    Assignments:
    • Read and be ready to discuss Chapter 5 (Four Freedoms).
    • Respond to Study Question 4 (minimum 250 words). Due 02/23.

  • Review of case law not yet covered in prior discussions.
  • Expectations and study notes for Mid-term exam (March 07).

  • Answer the five questions at the beginning of the document based on your readings of the cases cited in the volume. Due 03/30
